Stibal is an example of one of Saul Steinberg's series of "false paintings." He created trapezoidal works on wood, which were intended to hang as a group to create a perspectival view of artworks seen along a museum wall. Steinberg was interested in playing with the idea of representation as a construction. The subject, Madame Stibal, was an opera singer who lived on Strada Palas, the street where Steinberg grew up in Bucharest, Romania. She had a disabled son who could not leave the house and stayed in all day playing with postcards, where Steinberg would visit.
