D. Murphy is one of the artist’s most striking and sensitively-painted works. The vigorous brushwork of the canvas calls to mind the striking portraits of the legendary leader of the Ashcan school, Robert Henri. In fact, as a young art student in New York, Murphy eagerly attended Henri’s lectures and included descriptions of them in letters home to his parents in Savannah.
