He studied at the University of Georgia, where he discovered his primary medium in a documentary photography course, and he later learned from influential photographers George Tice and Eva Rubinstein. After traveling in Europe and living in Virginia, Leigh returned to Savannah in the 1970s. Here, he patiently recorded the lives of oystermen and other Southerners rarely seen in photographs. Author Pat Conroy wrote that Leigh’s photographs “are love letters he sends out to the South as fast as he can.” In Young Girl with Soda, a group of men look past a chain-link fence, presumably at a baseball game in action. In the foreground, a girl watches the game intensely, her lips pursed, one hand on her hip, with a can of soda in the other. Fully in her element, the young girl captures the enjoyment of a good game and a cold drink on a hot summer day.
