He served two years in the U.S. military, and upon his return to Savannah, he was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1959-1997.
DeLorme Sr. was a gifted amateur photographer. During the 1970s, DeLorme Sr. converted the family bathroom in their Parkside neighborhood home into a darkroom nearly every Saturday night to print his images. His children accompanied him on his photographic jaunts, often becoming subject matter in the process. His poetic black and white photographs captured Savannah before the city became a major tourist destination, documenting scenes of the city, Savannah's people, particularly children, fairs, circuses and the St. Patrick's Day parade.
His photographs appeared in print regularly in the 1970s, winning awards in the weekly “Amateur Photo Contest” published by the Savannah Morning News. This photograph was captured by DeLorme Sr. during the 1973 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah. It was printed in the April 1, 1973 issue with the caption: “Just in the nick of time, this young marcher in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade rescues his hat from beneath the wheels of a huge tank.”
