I used a 4x5 film camera on a tripod. The challenge with this photograph was to retain enough detail in both the shadow and the highlight areas to give an overall sense of life, a sense of presence to the image.
[Untitled] is the only picture I have ever left untitled. Part of the reason to give an image a title is to give it a beginning identity, a form of self-expression. This photograph was taken outside of the entrance to a doctor’s office in southern Spain. I suppose I did not feel the need to give it any more identification than I did."

Mark Uzmann’s interest in photography began in 1979 when he experienced technical issues with a camera on a trip to Guatemala City. Out of determination to make his photographs “turn out right,” Uzmann pursued an MFA in photography at SCAD in 2002 while teaching psychology classes. He describes his work as capturing “psycho-social artifacts” for viewers to explore.
