MacWeeney’s work is notable not only for its breadth of subject matter, but also for the wide range of emotion it so sensitively conveys. Lush landscapes, grimy streets, adults, children, and animals are all examined through MacWeeney’s lens, with overtones varying from warm and nostalgic to somber and forlorn. Flies in the Window wittily juxtaposes a window ledge full of dead flies with a distant open pasture of grazing cows—because of the unique use of perspective, the large, living cows appear to have no more mass than the tiny, dried-up fly carcasses.
