Founded in 1934, AAA commissioned some of the best known painters and printmakers of the day to create prints, which were published in limited editions of 125-250 impressions and sold through national department stores at deliberately affordable prices, starting around five dollars. Like the federally-funded Works Progress Administration, AAA generated work for artists during the lean years of the Depression while also increasing the availability of fine art to the average American.
