He studied at the Art Students League of New York with John Sloan, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and George Luks, and worked as an illustrator for the Daily News and The New Yorker. Acknowledged as one of his generation’s greatest practitioners of social realism, Marsh distinguished himself with his gritty portrayals of urban life and poverty in Depression-era Manhattan.
