Although a number of concerned citizens fought to preserve this beloved structure, they were unable to prevent its destruction. Their dismay over the loss of this landmark spurred the creation of the Historic Savannah Foundation, which still works today to preserve threatened historic structures. Oelschig depicts the market teeming with activity: shoppers of all ages and walks of life come and go, pedestrians and animals make their way through the crowd, and busy vendors ready their produce for sale.
