His style later evolved to working in large format color photography. This series of work, known as the Bay/Sky series, was shot with an 8 x 10 Deardorff camera on Cape Cod during the summer of 1977. Meyerowitz rejected his previous use of black and white in order to fully embrace the rich tonal qualities of working in color. He stated that he started using color because it “plays itself out along a richer band of feelings ̶ more wavelengths, more radiance, more sensation.” The works in the Bay/Sky series each depict similar viewpoints, but the varying time of day gives the works an individual richness of light and atmosphere. The works resist being simply beautiful beach scenes and instead evolve into intense studies of light as subject.
