While most of the abstract expressionists were known as painters, Marca-Relli mainly worked in collage and assemblage, frequently constructing abstracted figurative images from found materials including newsprint, mattress ticking, and burlap. He elevated the status of collage in abstraction as a constructive approach, often burning the edges of the material to accentuate and produce emotionally moving shapes and textures.
