After earning his BFA from the University of New Mexico and his MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Warren lived and worked in New York City for a short time, earning acclaim and attention for his work in the 1981 Whitney Biennial. However, he soon returned to the Southwest, the region that he finds most inspiring. Roper Gus is the name of one of the bulls that Warren cared for when his daughter was part of the Junior Rodeo. The frontal portrait humanizes the bull and reimagines the animal as more humorous than scary.
