There, he studied art under Ashcan school artists Robert Henri and George Bellows, becoming known for his embrace of New York’s bustling environment and diverse inhabitants in his social realist paintings. Although Soyer’s Jewish faith did not often feature prominently in his work, in this untitled portrait he depicts an Orthodox Jewish man at prayer.
