He was a member of the Board of Education and a founding member of the Georgia Historical Society. He also enslaved dozens of laborers at properties in Savannah and Chatham County. Silversmith David B. Nichols (1791-1860) was born in 1791 in New Haven, Connecticut and worked as a silversmith, jeweler, watchmaker, and retailer in Savannah, Georgia from 1815 to 1839 and again from 1843 to 1855. He formed a brief partnership with John P. Smith in 1820 as D.B. Nichols & Co. and continued as D.B. Nichols & Co. until 1830. The Kings pattern is a fiddle handle with scrolled and threaded edges and includes a scallop shell and anthemion motifs in relief along the stem.
