He was apprenticed to Samuel Richards, Jr. in 1802. By 1811, he had his own shop, then formed a partnership with Peter Bumm 1816-1818 (Whartenby & Bumm). From 1847 through 1852, the firm, which included his son and various others, was known as Whartenby & Company.
