Although we are uncertain what event occurred in her life in May 1937 to prompt her receipt of the box, the inscribed signatures on the lid indicate that it was probably a gift. Many of the signatures belong to important figures in social work, including Ellen Culver Potter (1871-1958), who was medical director of New Jersey’s State Department of Institutions and Agencies at the time; Ruth Cheney Streeter (1895-1990), the first woman president of the Morris County (New Jersey) Welfare Board and eventually the first director of the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve; Jessie P. Condit, who worked for the Children’s Aid Society of East Orange, New Jersey; and Cyrene B. Dear (1896-1992), who headed the Council of Social Agencies in Jersey City before becoming newspaper columnist and media company vice president in Washington, DC.
