He served as a judge of the Circuit Court of the United States, United States senator from Georgia, and mayor of Savannah from 1812 to 1814. Here, he is seen in heroic, sculptural form, against an undefined backdrop. His upward gaze to the side and his prominent jaw and brightly lit forehead project strength of character and solemnity. Philadelphia artist Rembrandt Peale may have painted this imposing portrait of Jones in Philadelphia around the time of Jones’s marriage to his third wife, Eliza Smith, daughter of the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
