His iconic sculptures and prints of simple words such as “LOVE” became a signifier in American culture through Christmas cards, book covers, and stamps during the mid-20th century. Inspired by gas station signs, neon advertisements, and billboards, Indiana married the written word and visual art to create works that seemed simple on the surface, but often were responsive to the contemporary zeitgeist. Indiana created 'Liberty ’76' encourages consideration over the word “free” as a choice one makes or has made for them. “ Text written for Spirit of Independence, July 1-December 1, 2020
