This image is one of several Verner created in the late 1920s in Savannah, not long after establishing her Charleston-based printmaking studio. Here, Verner depicts the ramp at the foot of East Broad Street at the river, with its curved fortified wall and the harbor light above. An advocate for historic preservation in her home city, Verner also supported preservation efforts in Savannah. One of Savannah’s long time waterfront landmarks, the cast iron Old Harbor Light (or Rear Range Light) was erected in 1858 as a navigational beacon at some 77 feet above the river level, to guide ships approaching the harbor. It was restored in 2001.
