Focusing on human forms in a subdued palette, his work was considered part of the American Scene style. Particularly adept at portraits, Brook once explained that “Whenever I hold closely to my original, instantaneous observation or try to emphasize even more the qualities I saw in my first conception I paint with greater ease and the result is more satisfactory to me.”
