The two women appear relaxed, lounging against a pillow and leaning casually against the rigging, while a man in the background looks at the horizon. Du Gardier studied in Paris with academic painters and at the École des Beaux Arts. His careful depiction of the figures’ stylish dresses and boat’s details follows the traditional conventions of representation that he learned. However, the loose brushstrokes he uses in the ocean and sky show the impact of Impressionism.
