Many of these works are on view in the Rotunda today. After Brandt’s death, artist Gari Melchers (1860–1932) became Telfair’s fine arts advisor. He purchased works by fellow American and European artists who used newer techniques to tackle subjects from everyday life. Some of these artists found inspiration in communities that they perceived to be outside the rapid change of modern cities. In this painting, Ralph Lewisohn captures a young Dutch goatherd in quiet solitude. She sits on sand dunes in the foreground, immersed in her handwork, her goats grazing behind her and the sea barely visible on the horizon.
