He did return to Italy again in 1924 to study art and produce new work after receiving the Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. His experience back in Italy led him to embrace the realism that he found in early Renaissance paintings. His own work is detailed, crisp, and rendered somewhat flattened by his heavy use of outlines.
