From the rough reeds of the basket and nutshells to the smooth, reflective glass of the green jug, Beulah Strong demonstrates her observational skills and broad technical abilities. The image is enlivened and considerably broadened by the reflection in the glass jug – a landscape within a still life. The reflected view is most likely a studio occupied by the artist during her student years in Paris. This painting was purchased for Telfair by its first director, Carl Brandt, who described it as “charming in tone and color.” It is the only Brandt acquisition painted by a woman artist.
