Moving to Dusseldorf, Germany, Dücker became an influential professor at the Academy there.
This marine painting depicts a scene on the north coast of Germany after a terrible storm. In the foreground, the shore is strewn with the timbers of vessels lost to the tempest. In the distance the sun breaks through the clouds, and a sailing vessel and steamer can be glimpsed on the horizon line, peacefully traversing the ocean. Dücker’s painting powerfully evokes the mercurial temperament of the ocean, swiftly alternating between turbulence and serenity.
