A retiring man who eschewed all public notice of his art, Ryder nevertheless established a strong reputation as a landscape artist, becoming a full academician of the National Academy of Design in New York and selling his work through the well-known Macbeth Galleries. In his own day he was credited with successfully translating the American landscape into twentieth-century terms.
