His grandfather had been a whaler, and as a youth Bellows made several trips to visit relatives in Sag Harbor, Long Island, an important whaling port in the nineteenth century. Bellows’s seascapes are a unique aspect of his production and have long been favorably compared to the masterful works of Winslow Homer in their ready grasp of the elemental nature of the sea. This painting depicts a scene on Monhegan Island, Maine, a location Bellows first visited with his friend and teacher Robert Henri in 1911.
