He enrolled at the Art Students League and took private classes with painter George Luks. In 1937, he was invited to join the faculty of the University of Georgia, where he spent more than three decades developing the university’s art department. Dodd’s work demonstrates the influence of American Scene painters such as John Steuart Curry, but his focus on dark, industrial landscapes links his work to that of the urban realist painters of the Ashcan school.
