Calder went on to teach at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. In Scratching Her Heel, Calder creates an original composition that combines both naturalistic and classical elements. The sculpture was among the first bronzes to enter Telfair’s collection, having been purchased for the museum by Fine Arts Advisor Gari Melchers in 1921.
