The center of this plate exemplifies naturalism, since it represents the dog, fox, and their forested landscape in detail. However, the convolvulus flowers surrounding the rim are conventionalized, or shown with fewer details, flat, and with strong outlines. Many champions of this style took inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints, as also seen in the vines' whiplash curves. Text written for "Lingua Flora," on view from June 21–September 8, 2024.
