By the River was selected by Gari Melchers for inclusion in a 1917 exhibition at the Telfair, and it was later purchased for the museum’s permanent collection by Telfair trustee Elizabeth Millar Bullard. This painting shows that Bosznay employed elements of both the Barbizon and Impressionist visual vocabularies. His choice of a broadly extended horizontal format and moderate impasto brushwork recollects the Barbizon painters. On the other hand, the use of bright, raw colors such as cornflower blue and chartreuse suggest Bosznay had been exposed to the vibrant palettes of the Impressionists.
