He began his career as a professional artist and teacher while still a teenager. Leaving his hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts, to study mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the precocious Woodbury began exhibiting his work at the Boston Art Club in 1882, took evening life classes there in 1883, and taught his first private sketching class in 1885. He went on to enjoy a long and illustrious career as both an artist and a teacher.
