In 1879, at the age of nineteen, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown of Toulouse. Shortly thereafter he moved to Paris and entered that city’s École des Beaux-Arts to study with Jean-Paul Laurens. Martin first exhibited at the Salon in 1880 and was awarded a first-class medal at the 1883 Salon. An 1885 trip to Italy marked the beginning of the artist’s lengthy period of experimentation with symbolism, impressionism, and pointillism. A combination of these elements became Martin’s signature style, which remained essentially unchanged until his death in 1943.
