Once there, he asked a local farmer to aid his quest to photograph them by having his dog chase them into the open. Using a large-format Deardorff camera, his celebrated photograph of that moment, Running White Deer, shows the blurred forms of the deer gliding like ghosts across the film. Standing White Deer, his contemplative image of the same herd standing still behind the crest of a hill emphasizes his striking use of light and shadow. A graduate of the California School of Fine Arts where Ansel Adams (1902–1984) established one of the premier photography programs in the U.S., Caponigro gained a reputation as photographer of nature.
