Much like an artist working with stone or wood, Beck uses grinders, saws, and hand tools to sculpt his cast pieces. In Come Along and Turquoise Axe, Beck turns seemingly mundane tools into works of art. Viewers become transfixed by the incongruent juxtaposition of the size, material, and rich blue color of the pieces, with their own understanding of these common objects. Rick Beck received a B.A. in art at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, and a M.F.A. with an emphasis on glass from Southern Illinois University. Beck works from his studio in North Carolina and teaches glassmaking at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. He also taught at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington and Appalachian Center for Crafts in Tennessee.
