They were used to serve a variety of alcoholic beverages, from beer to cordials, but most importantly wine. The act of decanting or pouring the wine from the spout of the bottle to the neck of the decanter, separated the wine from its sediments, resulting in a clearer and more appetizing beverage. Wealthy Savannahians of the 19th century were well-traveled, and their exposure to the European world is exemplified by the objects they purchased and brought home with them. This decanter was perhaps made in the former country of Bohemia, a region particularly noted for the development of colored glass with the engraving techniques shown on this decanter. A layer of blue glass was blown over a layer of clear glass, then the blue was cut away to reveal the clear beneath. This process could be done with any number of layers and colors and designs.
