Utilizing footage taken by photographer Helen Levitt, painter Janice Loeb, and writer James Agee, Levitt edited the scenes together to create a masterful chronicle of how “every human being is a poet, a masker, a warrior, a dancer.” At times humorous, sad, dramatic, exciting, and captivating, the film reveals life before television and air conditioning drove children and neighbors indoors. In these neighborhoods, the streets of New York City serve as a stage for myriad human interactions.
