Thomas drew these camellias from direct observations of the winter-blooming shrubs in friends’ gardens. She followed a format taken by many botanical illustrators, placing detailed samples of a plant against a black background to accentuate the colors of the plants’ flowers and foliage. The titles of this work specifies the variety "Herme"; there are tens of thousands of named varieties of camellias known today.
