Watson contemplates the impact of the built environment on the natural world and sees artmaking as a necessary extension of her environmental viewpoints. Her paintings of architectural elements such as bridges and highways—in this case, the “Spaghetti Junction” interchange in Atlanta—are cut out and constructed from reclaimed materials such as industrial waste, junk mail, product packaging, and concrete. Ultimately, Watson’s paintings express a desire for humanity to find balance between the vigor of a burgeoning city and the energy of its natural surroundings.
