Under the reign of Napoleo,n decorative styles were extremely ornate. After his final defeat, the prospering middle class sought simpler lives and furnishings. "Bieder" is a German word meaning common, or plain. "Meier" is a very common German surname. Biedermeier is essentially Empire furniture with all excessive decoration removed.
