Georgia-born Reuben Aaron Miller worked in a cotton mill, as an itinerant preacher, and as a farmer before gaining recognition from folk art dealers and private collectors for his whirligigs (objects that spin or whirl in the wind). To make these objects, Miller picked materials from his surroundings, like found bicycle wheels, pieces of wood, discarded iron posts, and old metal roofing. He typically adorned them with flat animal or human figures that he cut out of tin and painted.
