Using classical sources for inspiration was very common in the late 18th century. Craftspeople also often finished objects with light, delicate ornament, such as the intricate engravings known as 'brightwork', seen on this bowl. This sugar bowl is part of a tea set in Telfair’s collection and is attributed to Peter and Ann Bateman. The Batemans were the son and daughter-in-law of Hester Bateman, an English silversmith who successfully ran her family business for thirty years following the death of her husband John in 1760.
