During the 19th century refined sugar became cheaper and thus readily available to a larger section of the population. This sugar sifter is in the Rococo Pattern, which Gilbert L. Crowell, Jr. designed for Dominic & Haff of New York in 1888. Eighteenth-century “rococo” style, with abundant scrolls, curves, and floral motifs, probably inspired the scroll-shaped piercings in the bowl and cast flowers on the handle. The spoon was retailed by Bailey, Banks and Biddle of Philadelphia.
