He listened to their stories and brought their lives to the forefront through close-up, intimate portraits. He used a handheld strobe to spotlight his subjects against a background of darkness. His later photographs from 1990 capture a world in transition. While some images remain firmly planted in tradition, such as the scribe repairing fading Hebrew characters on Torah scrolls, others reveal the contrasts between changing communities as an Orthodox man walks past a young woman in a backless dress.
