He asked her permission to photograph, and she obliged, returning to the document in her hand. Davidson approached taking a photograph of an individual in one of three ways. Frequently, he would ask permission, showing his portfolio of photographs to reassure people that he was a professional photographer. Other times, he would snap the photograph first and then approach the individual and offer to send them a print. Occasionally, he would take the picture and not offer an explanation if there was no opportunity, or if he felt unsafe.
