On the weekends, he traveled to Paris where he became acquainted with the 92-year-old widow of French impressionist painter Leon Fauché. Using his small Leica camera, he photographed Madame Fauché’s quiet life surrounded by objects from the past. Here, she reaches out of the darkness of the room to rearrange flowers, presented in clear focus. Davidson includes a painting on the left of the frame, perhaps a reference to her husband’s profession. The series of photographs titled The Widow of Montmartre was admired by Henri Cartier-Bresson and served as an entry point for Davidson to join Magnum as a full member in 1959.
