The fender is plain with three graduated bars of steel separated by two rows of balls, and supported by ball feet. A bracket installed on either end holds fire tending implements. The shovel features a perforated design on the scoop. The original wood-burning fireplaces in the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters were later equipped with cast iron grates and fire backs to burn anthracite coal and radiate the heat into the room.
