senses in constantly changing light, sound, smell, and motion. It
also presents a wide panoramic view for miles that is a distinct
change from the densely forested landscape that makes up a
large part of the state.
–David Kaminsky
In Ossabaw #1, David Kaminsky transforms landscape into an
abstraction by horizontally stretching one sliver of a photographic
image. This work captures the atmosphere of Ossabaw Island, a
barrier island off the coast of Georgia that continues to inspire many
artists. Kaminsky’s conceptual approach to landscape photography
proceeds from his varied background. After graduating from the
University of Florida with an MFA in photography, Kaminsky worked
as a staff photographer for the Historic Preservation Section of the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources. After a year in Roswell,
New Mexico, Kaminsky moved to Savannah in 1980. Kaminsky
has taught at the Savannah College of Art and Design and opened
a color separations and photographic prints business. Kaminsky’s
photographs remain informed by his natural surroundings, especially
the marshes by his home.Subject MatterOssabaw Island, Georgia, United States of America
