Influenced by other street photographers such as Weegee, Brassaï, Jill Freedman, and Walker Evans, Earl’s portraits capture the energy of downtown after dark, creating an archive of inhabitants of Savannah’s social scenes—the risqué, the unabashed, the intimate, the daring, the funny, and the unamused. Her work veers from direct, sometimes unnerving eye contact to sly smiles and downturned glances from unaware patrons. Exposed under the bold flash of Earl’s camera, these images give the viewer a glimpse into the characters and the drama that play out in the smoke-filled patios, bars, and sidewalks of Savannah at night.
