He is one of the few photographers who made a body of work with artistic intentions, rather than only as documentation, in this area in the early 20th century. The impact of Pictorialism, a movement that emphasized tone and composition for aesthetic effects, can be seen in his framing and evocative hazy atmospheres. Grand Prize Races shows Savannah’s auto races that took place between 1909 and 1911.
